Liz Truss has resigned as British Prime Minister.

She held this position for 44 days.

“I acknowledge that, given the situation, I am unable to fulfill the responsibilities of the mandate entrusted to me by the Prime Minister, to which I was elected by the Conservative Party.

Therefore, I have contacted His Majesty the King to inform him that I am resigning as leader of the Conservative Party,” Truss said.

According to her, she will remain the head of the government of the United Kingdom until her successor is elected.

Elections for the new leader of the Conservative Party are to be held next week.

Graham Brady, chairman of the Tory steering committee, the so-called '1922 Committee', said the vote for a new head of the party and British prime minister could be completed by October 28.

Thus, by October 31, the country will receive a new political leader.

According to bookmakers, the main contender for the premiership is former Finance Minister Rishi Sunak.

Also among the likely candidates are House of Commons leader Penny Mordant, British Defense Secretary Ben Wallace and former Prime Minister Boris Johnson.

Truss officially took office as British Prime Minister on 6 September.

Thus, her stay at the head of the Cabinet lasted only 44 days.

This is a record short term for this position.

Prior to this, George Canning, who died on the 119th day of his reign (April 12, 1827 - August 8, 1827), could “boast” of such an achievement.

One of the main reasons for the resignation of Truss was the economic program presented by her Cabinet, which included large-scale tax cuts and state regulation.

Such a proposal led to an extremely painful reaction in the UK stock and bond markets, as well as a depreciation of the pound to a record low: it almost equaled the US dollar.

At the same time, the level of support for Truss in recent days at the head of the Cabinet has fallen to 10%.

Last week, the British edition of the Daily Star launched a livestream where you can watch lettuce go bad in front of a photo of Truss.

At the same time, bookmakers took bets on who would last longer: the then current prime minister or a vegetable.

On October 20, it became clear that lettuce had won.

Salad, in particular, received congratulations from Dmitry Medvedev.

The Deputy Chairman of the Security Council of the Russian Federation also explained why the "frantic Truss" can be awarded the Nobel Prize in Economics: "For the fastest collapse of national finances."

Following the completion of the Brexit procedure, Truss became the third British prime minister to step down from her post before the end of her term.

Theresa May and Boris Johnson, who gave his resignation speech on July 7, similarly resigned earlier.

Such transience was appreciated by the legend of English football Gary Lineker.

“Another prime minister has resigned.

Can you believe it?

It looks like we're left with no plan at all.

What a dead end we are in, ”he wrote on social networks.

Over the quick reshuffles in the British government, they even mocked the Twitter account of the cat Larry, a permanent resident of the residence on Downing Street, who has already experienced four prime ministers: “The king asked me to become prime minister, because this absurdity dragged on.”

As Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova noted, Liz Truss' tenure as British prime minister will be remembered for "catastrophic illiteracy" and the funeral of Queen Elizabeth II immediately after an audience with her.

“The British Prime Minister has not yet known such a shame (the word is crossed out. -

),” she wrote on Telegram.

According to the leader of the opposition Labor Party Cyrus Starmer, the Conservatives have demonstrated to the people of Great Britain their inability to govern the state.

“After 12 years of Tory failures, the British people deserve much more than this revolving door of chaos.

Over the past few years, conservatives have set record high taxes, ruined our institutions (authorities. -

RT

) and created a crisis (ongoing growth) in the cost of living, ”he said.

In his opinion, it will take years to recover from the damage caused by the conservatives.

“We need to be able to start from scratch.

It is necessary to hold general elections – now,” he stated.
