Sharif and Guterres call on the international community to help the flood victims in Pakistan

At a joint press conference today in Islamabad, Pakistani Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif and United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres urged the international community to provide the necessary support to help those affected by the catastrophic floods in Pakistan.

Guterres called on the world to amplify its assistance to Pakistan in the wake of the flood disaster, stressing the importance of supporting Pakistan to overcome many challenges, including economic stability.

"There is a need for joint efforts to help Pakistan overcome the consequences of climate change," he said, noting that Pakistan is witnessing an unprecedented natural disaster.

The Secretary-General of the United Nations commended the efforts of the Pakistani government, army and non-governmental organizations that dealt with the flood disaster.

For his part, Shahbaz Sharif revealed that more than 33 million people were affected by the floods, noting that Pakistan needs significant support and funding to rehabilitate the affected population and rebuild the damaged infrastructure.
