In the German debate about arms deliveries, the impression was repeatedly given that Ukraine would be lost if the federal government did not do more.

That was misleading if only because it primarily depends on the United States.

America is by far the most important arms supplier to the invaded country.

In Ramstein and Kyiv, Biden's ministers have now announced new aid packages that will increase US military aid to Ukraine to a total of $15.2 billion.

No other western country can compete with that.

Without modern western main battle tanks

The other issue that has been the subject of heated debate in this country has not yet proved to be decisive either.

Even without modern Western battle tanks, the Ukrainian army was able to launch a counter-offensive that has apparently already led to initial successes.

How durable they will be remains to be seen.

But it is clear that the recent Ukrainian advances have been made possible by Western equipment, most notably America's multiple rocket launchers.

There was a reason Putin wanted to stop Washington from delivering these very systems.

Nevertheless, the conflict is likely to remain a war of attrition for the foreseeable future, and a quick end is unlikely.

For Ukraine, it would still be the greatest achievement if it could force Russia to the negotiating table on its terms.
