Queen Elizabeth II died Thursday at Balmoral Castle, aged 96.

The sovereign, who reigned for 70 years, marked the history of her country.

We look back on his life in 10 key dates.

"The Queen died peacefully at Balmoral this afternoon".

It is with these few words that Buckingham Palace announced the death of Queen Elizabeth, Thursday at 7:30 p.m.

The monarch, who reigned for 70 years over the United Kingdom and the Commonwealth, marked the whole world.

We come back to 10 key dates in his life.

1936

The young Princess Elisabeth is 10 years old when her uncle, King Edward VIII abdicates.

Her father then became King George VI and she, heir to the throne.

1952

Princess Elisabeth and her husband Prince Philip are touring Australia and New Zealand in place of the king, who has lung cancer.

It was during a stopover in Kenya that the young woman learned of her father's death.

She becomes Queen of the United Kingdom, Great Britain and Northern Ireland and Head of the Commonwealth.

She was crowned the following year.

1957

Queen Elizabeth's grandfather, King George V, used to make a radio speech at Christmas.

On December 25, 1957, the young sovereign got up to speed and modernized the exercise by delivering her first televised Christmas speech.

1977

Queen Elisabeth celebrates her 25th year of reign that year.

On this occasion, the punk group Sex Pistols revamps the British anthem God Save the Queen in its own way.

They sing in particular that the queen is not human, that she represents a fascist regime and that there is no future in the English dream.

The song is banned from radio and TV but still manages to place itself in 2nd place on the charts.

1992

The 40th year of Elizabeth's reign has not been easy, to say the least.

The sovereign even qualified it, in a speech, as an annus horibilis.

Three of his children announced their separation that year, including Prince Charles and Lady Di.

Windsor Castle, his favorite, is partially destroyed by a serious fire.

1997

On August 31 of this year, Princess Diana was the victim of a fatal road accident in Paris.

While the whole country mourns the princess, the queen remains locked up in her Balmoral castle.

At the insistence of Prime Minister Tony Blair, the Queen agrees to return to London and address her subjects live on television.

She will even organize a princely funeral for her ex-daughter-in-law.

2002

Another black year for the queen.

Elisabeth II celebrates her 50 years of reign but does not really have the heart for the festivities.

At the beginning of February, Princess Margaret, her beloved younger sister, dies.

A month later, the queen mother, the sovereign's mother, died at the age of 101.

2012

It's the party in London for the opening of the Olympic Games.

And even the queen participates.

Millions of viewers are surprised to see the sovereign play in a short film alongside Daniel Craig, alias James Bond.

2020: The whole world is affected by Covid.

The queen, like her subjects, confines herself for weeks.

She, who rarely speaks, gives a televised speech full of hope and gratitude.

2022: Even if her health declines and she increasingly leaves her son Charles to assume his royal duties, the queen celebrates her 70th anniversary of reign.

The festivities are however tarnished by the absence of her husband, Prince Philip, who died a year earlier.
