A young man prevents a massacre in a mall in Indiana, USA

Greenwood Police Chief Jim Eason praised the intervention of a 22-year-old gunman to prevent an armed attack on shoppers at a mall in the state.

"The real hero is the citizen who was lawfully carrying a gun in the dining hall and was able to stop the shooter's attack almost as soon as it began," Jim Ayson said.

"This has shaken us so deeply," he added. "This is something we haven't seen in Greenwood before."

3 people were killed and two others were injured, on Sunday, when a person opened fire in a mall in the US state of Indiana.

"We witnessed heavy shooting at Greenwood Park Mall," Greenwood Mayor Marc Myers said in a statement. The city is located about 16 kilometers south of downtown Indianapolis, the state capital.

Myers noted that the shooter was shot dead by an armed person, and Greenwood Police posted a message on its Facebook page asking people who witnessed the shooting to call for information.

Greenwood Police Chief Jim Eason said the unidentified shooter entered the mall's restaurant stand carrying a gun and ammunition combs.

Ayson explained that among the wounded was a 12-year-old girl, adding that four deaths had been confirmed, including the primary shooter.
