100 years ago was the king's grandfather and celebrated the channel's 100th anniversary.

It has now been another 100 years and a new king is in place to celebrate.

- I think it's fun to be here today and celebrate when it's 200th anniversary.

Many people went to Berg's locks to celebrate the Göta Canal together with the royal couple.

- It was touching, so many children and families and everyone so happy and nice, says Queen Silivia.

"Important to celebrate"

During the construction itself, the canal has generated jobs and the necessary infrastructure for Sweden.

- It is very important to celebrate the Göta Canal because the construction of it provided many jobs, says Roger Altsäter.

Today, the canal does not serve the same purpose as it did in the past, but that does not make it any less important for it, because now it is instead one of Sweden's most visited tourist destinations.
