Sri Lanka's president, Gotabaya Rajapaksa, has announced his resignation.
Sri Lanka's National Assembly Speaker Mahinda Yappa Abeiwardena announced that President Rajapaksa had announced that he would step down from the presidency on the 13th.
The announcement of intention to resign came after the leaders of each party demanded the resignation amid intensified anti-government protests due to economic difficulties.
Sri Lanka declared temporary default in April and went into official default in May.
