Saudi Arabian blogger Raif Badawi has been released after serving 10 years in prison.

"He is free," Badawi's wife Ensaf Haidar, who lives in Canada, told AFP on Friday.

Badawi was arrested in 2012 and sentenced in 2014 to ten years in prison and a thousand lashes for "insulting Islam".

The sentence had already been served at the end of February, but the 38-year-old was initially detained.

The organization Reporters Without Borders (RSF) had asked the Saudi authorities to release Badawi immediately and allow him to return to his family.

Now the blogger is probably free again.

Numerous writers, celebrities and his wife had called for Badawi's release in the past.

The blogger has since gone on a hunger strike to protest the poor prison conditions.

According to estimates by the human rights organization Amnesty International, there are at least 3,000 political prisoners in Saudi Arabia.
