A man in his forties was arrested Wednesday in Mondelange, near Thionville (Moselle), after trying to steal a vehicle.

He would not have noticed that a child was in the back of the car when it was stolen, reports

Le Républicain Lorrain

.

According to our colleagues, the father was in the process of tying up his child in his parked vehicle and had left the keys on the ignition.

That's when the suspect allegedly popped up to get behind the wheel and drive off.

The owner of the car still managed to open the door and slip into the passenger side.

Psychiatric expertise

A fight would have broken out between the alleged thief and the father of the family.

The car then came to a stop a few hundred meters away.

The man behind the wheel fled on foot.

The police quickly disseminated the report of the criminal who was arrested in the evening by the anti-crime brigade.

Before committing his crime, the man escaped from a specialized hospital.

He should be the subject of a psychiatric examination.

While awaiting trial before the Thionville Criminal Court at the end of January, he was taken back to hospital.
