King Mohammed VI appoints members of the new Moroccan government

Moroccan King Mohammed VI on Thursday appointed members of the new Moroccan government headed by businessman and head of the National Rally of Independents Aziz Akhannouch, a month after he won the parliamentary elections, MAP reported.

The new government team, consisting of 24 ministers, including 7 women in addition to the prime minister, kept the same ministers in the sovereign portfolios, most notably Interior Minister Abdelouafi Laftit and Foreign Minister Nasser Bourita, in the context of diplomatic tension with neighboring Algeria.

The government formation also included new faces on the political scene, most of whom were technocrats.

King Mohammed VI commissioned Akhannouch, who has held the Ministry of Agriculture since 2007, to form the government, the day after his party, the National Rally of Independents, won the parliamentary elections on September 8, inflicting a resounding defeat on the Islamist Justice and Development Party, which led the government for two terms in the wake of the Arab Spring.

The government was formed from the Al-Tajammu and Al-Asala parties, which are considered close to the palace and are classified within the liberal ranks, and the Independence Party, which is classified within the center-right, in addition to the sovereign ministries handled by personalities who are not affiliated with parties.

The new government team witnessed the return of the former Minister of the Interior and Morocco's ambassador so far in Paris, Chakib Benmoussa, to the executive body in charge of the national education portfolio.

Benmoussa headed a royal committee that announced in May a "new development model" that is particularly reliable to reduce sharp social disparities and double the growth rate by the year 2035.
