Tensions between Algeria and Morocco following a project to confiscate real estate

Diplomatic relations between the two countries have been cut off since the summer of 2021, and the borders have been closed since then.

Today, a new episode of tension between Algiers and Rabat is emerging.

Algeria denounces “ 

provocations

 ” after the publication, on March 13, in the Moroccan Official Journal, of a draft decree announcing “ 

the expropriation of real estate

 ” necessary for the expansion of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs building. Flap.

However, these are three neighboring buildings which are the property of the Algerian embassy in Rabat.

Aside from this publication in the Official Journal, there has been no statement from the Moroccan Ministry of Foreign Affairs, nor reaction or comment, following the Algerian reaction to this news.

Rabat's plan to confiscate these assets belonging to the Algerian embassy in Morocco therefore provoked the anger of Algiers, which reacted by denouncing a series 

of "hostile acts

 " coming from its Moroccan neighbor.

Algeria considers that this is an “ 

unspeakable violation

 ” of respect and the duty of protection with regard to “ 

diplomatic representations of sovereign States

 ”, as indicated in the press release from the Algerian Ministry of Affairs. foreign countries, Sunday March 17.

The press release condemns, in the strongest terms, this “

 operation of clear-cut spoliation 

” which does not respect the Geneva agreement with regard to diplomatic relations.

Algiers affirms, finally, that it will respond to these provocations by “ 

all legal means that it deems appropriate

 ”, including within the framework of the UN authorities.
