The state radio of the Islamic Republic of Iran reported that the Revolutionary Guards used artillery and drones on Thursday to attack Kurdish militants in the Kurdistan region of northern Iraq.

The radio quoted the Revolutionary Guards as saying about the latest attack on what he called the insurgents based in Iraq, "in this process the headquarters of those who conspire against Iran's national security were destroyed."

There are frequent clashes in the remote and mountainous border area between Iranian security forces and Iranian Kurdish groups opposed to the Tehran government, such as the Party for a Free Life in Kurdistan, which is linked to the Kurdistan Workers' Party in Turkey, and the Kurdistan Democratic Party of Iran.

Iranian news agencies reported that Brigadier General Mohammad Pakpour, commander of the ground forces of the Revolutionary Guards, said - on Monday - that Iran was preparing to respond to the militants stationed across the border, and urged civilians there "to stay away from the headquarters of the terrorists to avoid being harmed."

Tehran had said earlier that it would take preventive measures if Baghdad did not expel Iranian Kurdish rebels from the Kurdistan region.

Iran has previously bombed Kurdish opposition armed groups based in northern Iraq, mostly in areas controlled by the semi-autonomous Kurdistan Regional Government.

A few weeks ago, Iranian media quoted Ali Shamkhani, Secretary of Iran's Supreme National Security Council, as saying, "We call on the Iraqi government to take more serious measures to expel these groups from Iraqi Kurdistan, so that Iran does not find itself compelled to take preventive measures against these armed terrorists."
