May 24, 2021 "The very serious accident from the Stresa-Mottarone cable car strongly re-proposes the issue of safety in the transport and traffic sector. After the recent collapses of the road bridges in Genoa, Aulla (MC) and La Spezia and the derailments of a local train in Pioltello (MI) and of the high-speed train in Tavazzano (MI) it is evident that the maintenance of the networks (road and railways) is insufficient and the ministerial surveillance systems of Ansfisa are inadequate ". Thus Dario Balotta, president of the National Infrastructure and Transport Observatory about the Stresa tragedy in which 14 people lost their lives.
"The supervisory body that recently unified the road and rail sectors, leaving the cable cars in limbo - explains Balotta - In fact, two years ago the Ministry of Transport had approved a decree, containing the models of operating regulations for the various types of cableway installations (chairlifts and cable cars, ski lifts and funiculars), in public service for the transport of people. These are checks for the operation and maintenance of cableway installations used for public transport of people that obviously have not been carried out and that once again leave a great shadow on the management of the recently become Ministry of Transport of Sustainable Mobility.Ministry that continues to propose new works without taking care of the maintenance of existing ones and supervising their safety ".
