The police officer stabbed in a police station in Rambouillet, a town of 26,000 inhabitants 60 kilometers from Paris, died.

Interior Minister Gerald Darmanin is on his way to the scene.

The attack took place around 2.20pm, according to a police source.

The official, hit by a slit in the throat, died on the spot following a "cardio respiratory" arrest.

The attacker died in hospital, where he was taken in serious condition, after being hit by gunshots fired by the victim's colleagues.
