Can the Russian Sputnik V vaccine help Europeans speed up their vaccination campaign?

The product must first be approved by the European Medicines Authority, which could take a few more weeks.

Countries in the east of the continent did not wait.

Further west, we remain cautious.

This is less the case in Germany where a first region, Bavaria, announced this Wednesday, April 7 the conclusion of a preliminary contract with the Russian producer.

Several German politicians had already declared that they had no qualms about the Russian vaccine Sputnik V, provided it was approved.

Angela Merkel said last month that if the European Union gave up ordering doses of the vaccine for all 27 member states, Germany could do it alone.

Health Minister Jens Spahn added that his services were already in contact with Russia.

In the end, Bavaria was the fastest.

Its Minister-President Markus Söder announced on Wednesday the signing of a pre-contract: “

If Sputnik V is authorized in Europe, Bavaria will buy 2.5 million doses available in July to increase our vaccination capacities.

 "

Discussions were held with the Russian sovereign wealth fund which financed the development of the vaccine.

The doses could be imported but a production line will be set up in the subsidiary of the Russian group R-Pharm, near Augsburg in Bavaria.
