Hanau (AP) - The Lord Mayor of Hanau, Claus Kaminsky, reported on Monday about the desecration of the temporary memorial at the Brothers Grimm memorial for the victims of the Hanau attack.

He was informed in the early hours of the morning that strangers had devastated the place and desecrated the memory of the dead, it said in a message.

After the forensics department released the memorial, the flowers and pictures stored in memory of the victims of the attack were immediately put back in order, it said.

In view of the video surveillance on the square, he is confident that the investigation will soon progress.

After the racially motivated attack on February 19, 2020 with nine dead, the Brothers Grimm feature on Hanau's market square had developed into a temporary memorial.

The relatives of the victims had recently thanked the Hanau City Society for their solidarity in an open letter and announced that they would remove the temporary memorial on March 19.
