Rechlin (dpa) - The shipbuilder Fassmer GmbH & Co. KG (Berne) closes its traditional East German shipbuilding location Rechlin on the Müritz (Mecklenburg Lake District).

As a spokesman for the community said on Saturday, the Fassmer subsidiary will surprisingly close its doors at the end of March.

The 30 employees have already been informed of this.

One of the reasons given was the economic pressure caused by the pandemic.

At first, nobody at the Fassmer Group was ready to comment.

The news platform “Wir sind Müritzer” had previously reported on the planned closure.

Rechlin was known for decades for the fact that, among other things, free-fall lifeboats for large ships were manufactured there.

Fassmer took over this part of the then shipyard after 1990.

Most recently, complex welded parts and systems for mega yachts, cruise ships as well as accessories and landing platforms for helicopters on large wind turbines were produced in Rechlin.

A year ago, Managing Director Harald Fassmer had spoken of a “stable order situation”.

The Fassmer Group, headquartered in Lower Saxony, has so far had 1,600 employees at several locations, including in Poland and China.

They also supply cruise ship manufacturers.

The annual turnover was given with 150 to 200 million euros.
