More than 100 people were killed when gunmen attacked the troubled region of Benishangul-Gumuz in western Ethiopia at dawn on Wednesday, according to the country's National Human Rights Commission.

The perpetrators are said to have entered the village of Bekoji a few miles from the town of Bulen and shot people and set fire to houses where people were sleeping.

Benishangul-Gumuz, which is relatively close to the conflict-torn Tigray, has in recent years been the scene of violent clashes.

Recently, farmers and businessmen from the neighboring region of Amhara have moved to the area, which has caused conflicts over agricultural land to flare up.
