The University Clinic in Essen has decommissioned around 40,000 protective gowns from the van Laack fashion company, whose order is criticized by the opposition in the state parliament.

The gowns would "tear quickly when you put them on," said the clinic on request.

The 40,000 gowns provided by the country arrived at the University Clinic in Essen at the end of August, but were not released for use, the clinic announced on Tuesday.

“To protect our users and patients, we only use protective gowns made of fleece, which according to

DIN EN ISO 10993-5 are tested and certified ”, it said in the message.

The van Laack smocks - which came in 476 packages - are currently being stored.

The clinic confirmed a report from the podcast "Lauer und Wehner".

Van Laack initially did not respond to the dpa request.

In a joint report by the magazines "Capital" and "Stern", a spokeswoman is quoted as saying: "Of course, our customers only receive deliveries that meet the requirements and criteria of the orders."

Van Laack's smocks are currently not being used in other clinics.

Upon request, the University Clinic in Münster announced that the 28,800 parts that had arrived there had not yet passed the standard in-house inspection - and are therefore still in the warehouse.

Even at the University Clinic Düsseldorf, which according to a spokesman received 19,200 gowns in size L and 9600 in size M, the van Laack gowns have not yet been unpacked.

They still have enough supplies and they haven't opened yet.

Therefore, there is also a lack of "practical experience," said the spokesman.

It cannot be said whether they tear really quickly.

The NRW Ministry of Health pointed out on Tuesday evening that the gowns were procured and distributed in March due to the delivery emergency.

Although they “do not fully” meet the requirements of the European Protective Equipment Ordinance “and the relevant standards”, they have been tested by the ministry and approved for use during the pandemic.

Obtaining the smock was an issue in the state parliament

As with respiratory masks, a solution had to be found quickly at the end of March or the beginning of April, as the usual process including the “type examination” would have taken several weeks or months, according to a ministry spokesman.

The procurement of a total of ten million protective gowns will also be a topic in the state parliament's plenary session on Wednesday.

The SPD and the Greens have each made inquiries to the state government.

The deal with the fashion manufacturer van Laack sparked debates, as Prime Minister Armin Laschet's (CDU) son established contact with the company.

Johannes "Joe" Laschet is a fashion blogger and advertising partner of the Mönchengladbach company.

Later, van Laack received two orders from the Interior Ministry for 1.25 million fabric masks each for the police.

The second order for masks for the police is also a matter for an inspection authority.

In the past week, a so-called review request was received, the Cologne district government announced on Tuesday.

Lawyer Thomas Mösinger from the law firm “Mösinger Bakes Kollewe” submitted the application on behalf of an entrepreneur from the Wuppertal area.

The entrepreneur is also active in the industry, but has not had a chance.

The public procurement tribunal is a court-like body.

Upon request, it reviews public procurement procedures whose volumes reach or exceed certain thresholds.
