Dubai Municipality revealed that it has developed a comprehensive plan to combat mosquitoes that are caused by rainwater pools during the winter season, by using sound wave devices.

The Director of the Public Health Pest Control Department, Eng. Hisham Abdulrahman Al-Yahya, said that the municipality conducted early surveys to identify areas that may be an appropriate environment for the insect to reproduce, stressing that the campaigns are continuing throughout the year, and that the department continues to use advanced mosquito control methods by using Sound wave devices, which transmit vibrations in the water, and disrupt the vital functions of mosquito larvae, which leads to their immediate elimination. This device is used in large water bodies in the Emirate of Dubai, which are considered a suitable place for mosquitoes to breed.

Al-Yahya explained to "Emirates Today" that the municipality worked to take the necessary precautions and prepare well to eradicate the mosquito insect, especially with the onset of the winter season, as the work teams intensified their efforts and resources in the Public Health Pest Control Department of the Public Health Services Department to combat mosquitoes. And limit their reproduction by conducting early surveys of all areas that may be an appropriate environment for reproduction due to the presence of water bodies in them.

He continued: “The municipality was able, through the assigned work teams, to monitor any places that may be hotbeds for mosquito breeding, through the monitoring operations of the Technical Services Division, which target 44 important sites in the Emirate of Dubai, in which the mosquito monitoring devices are distributed, where the prevalence rates are monitored. These devices are distributed in the most important land, sea and air ports of the country, horse stables, race tracks, parks, public parks and nature reserves, to determine infection rates and early detection of invasive pests and to control them and prevent them from living and acclimatising in the Dubai environment. The mosquito traps devices are considered to be of modern technologies that work independently.

He added, "Immediate measures are taken, as soon as there is any increase in the infection rates of mosquitoes, through the control teams concerned with the department in the event of any increase in mosquito prevalence rates beyond the rates specified in the approved work indicators and targets."

Awareness campaigns

Dubai Municipality has demanded, through intensive awareness campaigns, to get rid of any water accumulations around and inside homes, in all its forms, through many practices that call on the public to adhere to their application to avoid the reproduction of mosquitoes.

And she stressed the need to get rid of water pools in and around the house's yard after the rains fall, prevent any leakage from the faucets, get rid of the water that leaks from the water cooling refrigerators, get rid of the water leaked from irrigation of ornamental plants, and moderate the irrigation of the home garden, and get rid of water pools in Old or damaged tires, sealing water wells, sealing water tanks, disposing of stagnant water in fountains and swimming pools, disposing of water pools in empty barrels and containers, disposing of water pools leaking from air conditioners, and constantly replenishing animal drinking water if any.

She indicated the need to ensure the integrity of the windowsills, and to cover the sewage openings tightly.
