In a press release, UN experts call on Yaoundé to release the president of the Cameroon Renaissance Movement,

Maurice Kamto

, who has been stranded at his home since September 22.

Officially, he is not the subject of any arrest warrant or house arrest, but according to his lawyers, he cannot leave his home.

His residence is surrounded by a hundred elements of the gendarmerie and the police.

And the authorities verbally told him not to leave his home.

For his lawyers, this house arrest is illegal, they have also taken legal action.

The government has not communicated on the subject.

But a few days ago, a government source pointed out that the police are on the public highway.

And that at no time did they enter his home.

In their press release, the experts indicate that the house arrest of the leader of the MRC could constitute a deprivation of liberty.

The experts expressed their concerns to the authorities, recalling that under international law, everyone has the right to organize and participate in peaceful assemblies.

Experts also call for the release of all those arrested during protests organized by the opposition last month, saying they are extremely concerned about the mass arrests.

According to them, more than 500 people were arrested following the September 22 marches in Douala and Yaoundé.
