The Italian Prime Minister asked for more guarantees on Saturday before a return of football and its flagship championship, Serie A, stopped since March 9 due to the coronavirus pandemic.

"To venture to give a date (of recovery, note) we need some additional guarantees, which for the moment do not exist", declared the Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte during a press conference.

"We must first wait until the conditions are fulfilled in order to guarantee the resumption of the championship, not just football (...), in conditions of maximum security", said Mr. Conte, adding to hope that these conditions are " completed as soon as possible. "

The Italian clubs, which have said they want to resume the championship on June 13, were able to restart individual training on May 4 and should be back in group training on Monday.

In this context, the Italian football federation announced Thursday that it has tasked a team of inspectors to verify compliance by Serie A clubs with the health protocol in place to allow training to resume.
