• Israel.Gantz and Netanyahu, one step away from forming a unity government
  • Benny Gantz receives the commission to form a government in an empty Israeli parliament due to the coronavirus

In one of the most dramatic decisions in its history, the Israeli Supreme Court has dismissed the appeals filed both against the ability to form a Government by a deputy under trial (Benjamin Netanyahu) and against the complex and unpublished agreement of the Government of rotation between the current acting Prime Minister and the leader of the Blue and White centrist bloc, Benny Gantz.

The eleven judges - meeting on Sunday and Monday under the baton of the Chief Justice, Esther Hayut - point out that there is no legal reason "to intervene in the charge of the formation of the Government by Deputy Netanyahu." The judges clarify that their unanimous decision does not diminish the ethical gravity of the charges brought against the veteran leader for bribery, fraud and breach of trust, although he recalls that he is assisted by the right of innocence in a trial that begins on May 24. . Regarding the controversial points of the agreement, he admits that it presents important difficulties but adds that "for the moment" he does not intervene .

In this way, the way is paved for the broad government of unity to swear office next Wednesday in the Knesset, away from the ghost of the fourth elections since April 2019. After the last elections of March 2, which did not give the majority Netanyahu and Gantz surprisingly agreed to neither of the two blocs extending the deep political blockade on April 20, an agreement according to which the first will remain prime minister until November 2021 when he will be replaced by the second who until then will occupy the Defense portfolio. A relay that few believe will be fulfilled.
