Cristiano Ronaldo, his team-mates and the Portugal team management have given up half of their Euro 2020 qualification bonus to help national amateur football, which has had its competitions canceled by the coronavirus epidemic , announced the Portuguese federation on Monday.

This donation will "strengthen" a support fund created by the federation and which plans to help regional associations and amateur clubs to the tune of 4.7 million euros, the body said in a statement.

The FPF decided last Wednesday to end competitions at the amateur level without designating a winner.

No decision has been made regarding a possible resumption of professional competitions in Portugal, but its organizer seemed reluctant to give it up.

"It is essential that the championships end because it will restore a certain normalcy and prepare for next season knowing who has access to international competitions, who is champion and who is relegated", said in late March the president of the League, Pedro Proença.

Winner of Euro-2016, Portugal will not defend its title this summer as planned, because the European championship has been postponed for a year.
