The Attorney General of the Emirate of Abu Dhabi has ordered the seizure and bringing of a number of people for their misuse of social media, against the backdrop of video clips containing behaviors and expressions that affect the public morals of society.

The Attorney General emphasized that the legislation in the UAE has tackled all practices that constitute acts against public morals, through the use of modern technology and social media. Where Article 17 of Federal Decree-Law No. 5 of 2012, on combating information technology crimes, states that “he shall be punished by imprisonment and a fine of no less than 250,000 dirhams and not more than 500,000 dirhams, or by one of these two penalties, whoever creates or runs a website Or supervised, broadcast, transmitted, published, or republished through the information network pornographic material, and everything that might affect public morals. He explained that the use of modern communication techniques in crime is considered an aggravating circumstance, according to the law.

He added that social media users should show a spirit of responsibility towards media materials and videos that are published through their accounts, because they affect a large segment of children and youth, and that these abusive behavior of these behaviors would incite others to do so and subject them to legal accountability.

For its part, the Abu Dhabi Public Prosecution warned against using social media to publish anything that might harm the community, or to prepare, produce, use, publish or send any words, phrases, signs, symbols, drawings, pictures, registration or writings, whether they are Visible, audible or illegitimate, in a way that offends society or public order, confirming that it will take the necessary legal measures against anyone who breaks the law.
