  • Maryse Joissains, the outgoing LR mayor, leads the first round with 30% of the vote "despite a difficult campaign".
  • Anne Laurence Petel and Marc Pena, who came second and third respectively, saw the outgoing mayor higher and hoped for alliances in the second round to beat Maryse Joissains.

A candidacy for a fourth term despite a conviction for embezzlement and illegal taking of interests. Not to mention a penalty of ineligibility canceled by the Court of Cassation less than a month before the ballot. Maryse Joissains, in a delicate position, finally leads the first round in Aix-en-Provence with 30.8%, ahead of the deputy for La République en Marche, Anne Laurence Petel, 18.3%, and Marc Pena, candidate for the gathering of the left, with 16.5%.

"The Aixois placed me very largely at the head of this ballot with more than 30% of the votes, in spite of a difficult campaign", she commented.

EELV referee of the second round?

Anne Laurence Petel however saw Maryse Joissains higher with "her clientelist system and her power worthy of a multinational" and believes that these results are "a good chance to beat her, if we arrive at the rally". A rally that she imagines with Dominique Sassoon from EELV (9.5%) and the various right-wing Jean-Marc Perrin (9%), more than with Marc Pena "who still counts France Insoumise" in its ranks. "I do not want to offer Aixois a large tote but something coherent, so I will think about all that," she says.

Marc Pena also considers that the result of Maryse Joissains is rather auspicious for the second round. "It was 38% in 2014, so it wins but it does not overwrite," he considers. He is delighted with his score, "a good score when we think about the state of the left", and plans to enter into discussions with other candidates this Monday "after having discussed with my teams". An alliance with Dominique Sassoon of EELV, who will therefore be in high demand, is the option considered.
