The talks take place in the midst of the ongoing border crisis. Erdogan's announcement a week and a half ago about opening Turkey's border to the EU has prompted thousands of migrants and refugees to reach the border with Greece in the hope of moving on.

The Erdogan calls for more EU assistance to deal with the at least 3.6 million Syrians who have fled to Turkey from the war in Syria. He does not think that the EU has lived up to the agreement signed in 2016 on European billion aid for refugee camps in exchange for stricter Turkish control of attempts to enter the EU without permission.

However, the EU side believes that it has done what it should and has angered the Turkish attempts to press with the help of refugees and migrants.

"Refugees must not be used as tiles in a political game, we mean that Turkey is doing now," said Foreign Minister Ann Linde (S), for example, last Friday.
