Al-Jazeera Net - Khartoum

Inevitably, the armored corps of the Sudanese army will not be in the suburb of Al-Shajarah, south of Khartoum alone, if the quick efforts of the leader of the Rapid Support Forces, Muhammad Hamdan Hamidati, succeed in forming a unit of armor and tanks that will bring him closer to the balance of power with the army.

The announcement, which the RSF posted on its official Facebook page to re-enlist individuals in its armored unit, has attracted attention, and it is sufficient that approximately 1,600 people commented on the case.

The reinforcement of Hamidati’s forces on the ground gives the ambitious man new benefits that help him extend his expanding political and financial influence, linked to regional hubs that include the UAE, Saudi Arabia and Libya Haftar, since the overthrow of President Omar al-Bashir in April 2019.

Since its establishment in 2013, the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) became famous for using the Japanese SUV, which is locally known as the "Thatcher", which made it superior to the government army in the war against the armed movements in Darfur.

Meeting of Entebbe
Despite the state of restlessness in the midst of the army, from the influence of Hamidati and the spread of his forces in Khartoum and eastern Sudan, where the ports are on the Red Sea, it seems that there are old alliances with the President of the Sovereign Council, Abd al-Fattah al-Burhan, and the United Arab Emirates, which maintain Hamidati's fortunes.

The sit-in incident and its aftermath, such as the one million June 30, 2019, curbed the forces of the revolution by the man who sought, through a Canadian public relations firm, access to Russia and the United States.

And if it is true that the proof has taken the decision to meet the Israeli Prime Minister with Entebbe alone, this stimulates a state of competition with Hamidati and enhances the shares of the evidence by his intransigence with Netanyahu, especially since countries like Egypt and America see in Hamidati only a militia leader.

According to a retired army officer for Al-Jazeera Net, Hamidati definitely looks to meet Al-Burhan and Netanyahu with suspicion from the fact that he has not demonstrated any position yet despite the data war that he ignited from Entebbe.

Old ambition
The interest in rapid support began with the possession of an armored unit since the era of Al-Bashir. She obtained the locally-made "Sharif 1" and "Seal 2" armored vehicles to assist Hamidati's forces in a campaign to collect weapons in Darfur launched by Al-Bashir.

The Sudanese Military Capacity page on Facebook - an unofficial page aimed at introducing the capabilities of the armed forces - reported in October 2017 that a regiment of Hamidati's forces had already received these armored vehicles.

After breaking up the sit-in in front of the General Command of the Army in Khartoum on June 3, 2019, residents of the capital saw members of the Rapid Support Forces using armored vehicles, which were reported to be Emirati-made at the time.

And the American investigative reporter Christian Treibert revealed at the time the use of rapid support for the UAE Ajban 440 armored vehicles, and in a video clip he monitored a convoy of such armored vehicles near the army command.

Emirati plan
Humaidati’s early interest in reinforcing the armored unit is a blasphemy, assuming that the announcement of the recruitment for the return of personnel to the armored unit last week was intended only to absorb the forces of the operations that were affiliated with the security apparatus and that were disbanded.

Soon after the sit-in was resolved, leaks talked of proposals to restructure the army, behind which the UAE and the commander of the Rapid Support Forces were standing. The plan included the elimination of the armored corps in Khartoum.

And officers in the armed forces say that the placement of new officers in the armored corps has always been enjoyed by those belonging to the Islamists who have ruled the country for thirty years.

According to the officers, the verbal argument that broke out in July 2019 between Hamidati and the commander of the armored corps, Major General Nasr al-Din Abdel-Fattah (who was later removed) was merely a reflection of Hamidati's ambitions in this weapon.

"Marvit" the army
According to the Rapid Support Forces' recruitment announcement, retired and active officers see that Hamidati is targeting "marafit" from the army who have worked in the armored and artillery arm by virtue of the requirement that he be at least 40 years old.

The advertisement mentioned technical conditions for the applicants, including obtaining courses in armor and mechanics electricity and tanks, while the required uses included a tank armored vehicle, an armored thrower, a tank technician, an armaments technician, an ammunition technician, and a radio technician.

According to an officer in the army, the armored weapon is difficult to dispense with its distinguished technical cadres, so those separated from this weapon will not benefit the quick support very much, and the armoring of Hamidati forces with armored vehicles as soldiers carriers will not disturb the balance of forces with the army that possesses tanks and slaughterhouses.

The officer admits to Al Jazeera Net that working in quick support for a technician separated from the army will be tempting because of the good salaries that Hamidati gives to his forces.

Communication platforms circulated last November, a photo of an army armored vehicle in the army as he saluted the image of Hamidati at a quick support exhibition at the Military Museum in Khartoum North.

Funding sources
On the other hand, a retired officer believes that Hamidati continues to create a force of rapid support parallel to the army from the reality of his great influence in terms of possessing huge sources of funding from the Yemen war and investing in gold prospecting, as well as the support he enjoys from the UAE.

In an interview with Al-Jazeera Net, he indicates that the stationing of Hamidati’s forces inside Khartoum would neutralize weapons that are distinguished by the army, such as tanks and aviation, which provides a platform for Hamidati’s growing ambitions to strengthen his forces.

It does not appear that Hamidati will abide by the constitutional document that governs the transitional period, which provides for the restructuring of the regular forces - including his forces - that enables him in the current situation to be a political player in the Sudanese scene.

A political activist close to Hamidati told Al-Jazeera Net that the man is unwilling, neither near nor far, to fully integrate his forces into the armed forces.

air force
In addition to tens of thousands of soldiers from the rapid support, Hamidati inherited assets belonging to the General Intelligence Service, including three aircraft.

According to the retired officer, Hamidati now possesses combat helicopters that he inherited from the security apparatus, and officers of the army pilots have been assigned to work with the Rapid Support Forces, as well as Hamidati’s dispatch of elements to Russia to train in warfare.

But the army officer reduces the planes that Hamidati inherited from security in that it is three cargo planes, one of which is a helicopter, before he admits that there is an army of rapid support missions that are always favored by officers.
