On Saturday evening, two simultaneous attacks targeted the heavily fortified Green Zone in central Baghdad and an Iraqi air base containing US soldiers north of the capital, security sources said.

Two mortar shells fell on the Green Zone in the center of the Iraqi capital, where the headquarters of the US embassy was attacked on Tuesday by factions loyal to Iran, according to Iraqi and other security sources in the green.

The sources indicated that the siren sounded in the green zone.

Meanwhile, a Katyusha missile landed on the Iraqi Balad Air Base (about a hundred kilometers north of Baghdad), which includes American soldiers and American planes, according to security sources at the scene.

Soon thereafter, American planes flew over the base and conducted a reconnaissance operation for the area, according to the same sources.

Washington has strengthened the security of its diplomats, soldiers, and consulate headquarters in Iraq, following the killing of Iran's Quds Force commander Qassem Soleimani and the leader of the Iraqi popular crowd, Abu Mahdi Al-Muhandis, with an American strike in Baghdad at dawn Friday.
