The governing bodies of the Austrian environmental party lifted this last Saturday 4 January the last obstacle to a historic alliance with the conservatives of Chancellor Sebastien Kurz by voting overwhelmingly in favor of the government program.

Seven months after the break of his alliance with the far right, the conservative Sebastian Kurz will therefore lead a coalition with the environmentalists . More than 93% of delegates to the National Greens' congregation endorsed the government program negotiated with the Conservatives.

The result was expected, but the Greens still had to swallow some snakes, especially in terms of migration policy, which will remain very restrictive. In addition, they subscribed to the possibility of interning potentially dangerous individuals, a project that dates back to the time when Kurz still ruled with the FPÖ . The ban in the future for young girls under 14 from wearing the veil at school is also widely criticized among the Greens.

But ultimately, Werner Kogler, party leader and future number two in the government, was able to convince his friends that 14% in the September legislative elections against more than 37% for the Conservatives required compromise. " This is pioneering work at the European level, " he insisted, recalling that the Greens notably obtained a super-ministry of Climate, Infrastructure and Technology.
