The Central Election Commission ordered, this Friday, in Spain that the Catalan independentist Quim Torra, condemned for “disobedience”, is stripped of his functions of regional deputy, which would imply that he loses the presidency of the region.

According to the statute of this region of the northeast of Spain, its president must be a regional deputy.

The right and the far right demanded his removal

This decision follows the condemnation of Quim Torra on December 19 to 18 months of ineligibility by the Spanish justice for "disobedience". He had refused to obey the order of the electoral commission to remove independenceist emblems from the facade of the seat of regional government during an election campaign. This judicial conviction was not final, however, because Quim Torra appealed to the Supreme Court of Spain.

Without waiting for the final justice decision, the Election Commission agreed on Friday with the right and far right parties who asked that Quim Torra be dismissed. In response, the Catalan president announced in a press release that he would speak in the evening. He has always declared that "only the Parliament of Catalonia", mostly independentist, could remove him from his functions.
