Giuseppe Iachini has been named coach of Fiorentina (Serie A), replacing Vincenzo Montella, who was sacked on Saturday, the Italian club announced on Monday.

"The current position of the club has forced us to change coaches," said club owner Rocco Commisso.

Iachini, 55, replaces Vincenzo Montella, who pays the poor results for the Florentine team, only 15th in Serie A.

"We chose Iachini because he has strong ties to Florence and the Fiorentina club," added Commisso. "We must remain united and get back on the right path as quickly as possible."

Iachini, a former midfielder, played between 1989 and 1994 for the Fiorentina, playing 127 games in the purple jersey.

He was free since his dismissal from Empoli (currently in Serie B) in March.

Iachini has also previously led Sampdoria, Palermo, Sassuolo and Udinese.

Beaten 4-1 on the pitch on Friday by AS Rome, Fiorentina have taken just two points in the last seven days and have slipped to 15th place in the league.

Worn at the start of the season by the talent of their rookie Franck Ribéry, the team has been struggling since the serious ankle injury of the Frenchman, who will not return to competition until February.

Fiorentina's next Serie A match will take place on January 6 in Bologna.
