• 'Impeachment'. Democrats charge Donald Trump with charges of abuse of power and obstruction of Congress
  • The impeachment against Trump is "motivated by hate", according to Republicans
  • 'Ukrainegate': Donald Trump is accused of creating a parallel diplomacy to be re-elected

Donald Trump is about to become the third president of the United States who is subjected to a 'political trial', that is, to the process by which the Congress of that country must decide whether to dismiss the head of State and Government. To date, only two presidents have undergone this process: Andrew Johnson, in 1868, and Bill Clinton, in 1998. A third, Richard Nixon, resigned in 1974 before the procedure was opened. The president of the United States enjoys legal immunity.

And it can only be ceased, according to the Constitution in the fourth article of its second title, if it has committed "treason, bribery, or other serious crimes and offenses." Some alleged crimes and offenses that in the case of Trump are two: abuse of power and obstruction of Congress.

The charges against Trump have been filed today by the president of the House of Representatives, Nancy Pelosi, which is the body that must decide the accusations against the president, the so-called 'articles of impeachment'. These are two: abuse of power and obstruction of Congress. Tomorrow, Wednesday, the Judicial Committee of the House of Representatives will vote on these two accusations.

The accusation of abuse of power refers to Trump's decision to suspend the delivery of anti-tank missiles worth 391 million dollars (353 million euros) to Ukraine until the government of that country announced the opening of an investigation against Hunter Biden, the son of his biggest rival in the 2020 elections, Joe Biden, for alleged corruption as a member of the board of directors of that country's gas company, Burisma. The operation was only known for the performance of an anonymous informant (whistleblower) who denounced the president's performance.

According to the document with the charges against Trump drawn up by the Judicial Committee of the House, Trump tried to use the Government of Ukraine to "help his re-election, damage the electoral expectations of a political opponent, and influence the presidential elections in his favor. 2020 ". For this, the president "acted both directly and through his agents inside and outside the US State."

The obstruction to Congress is based, according to the same document, that "Trump has violated his oath of the Constitution", by ordering his subordinates "the indiscriminate breach of the citations of the House of Representatives" to members of his cabinet and collaborators to testify in the investigation.

Thus, everything seems paved so that the 'impeachment', that is, the imputation, is carried out successfully, even if that does not mean the president's cessation. Moreover, this possibility seems remote, unless there is a political cataclysm that nobody is able to foresee.

For the Democrats, it's about the defense of the law. This has been shown by the president of the House, Nancy Pelosi today, when, when presenting the document, she has insisted that "the first act carried out by members of Congress is the solemn oath to protect and defend the United States Constitution ". For Republicans, however, it is only a political process.

Trump has given different arguments to justify his action. First, he denied it. Later, he said that he had canceled the shipment of weapons to Ukraine - a country in technical war with Russia for almost 5 years - to pressure European countries to increase their aid to the Kiev Government, a hardly credible argument if you have in he says that the EU and the IMF have granted more help than the US to that country. In recent days, Trump has stated that when on July 25 he told the Ukrainian president, Volodimir Zelensky, that "I need you to do us a favor," he meant a "favor" to the United States, not him or Your campaign

All these considerations are now for the House of Representatives and the Senate. Because, since the Democratic opposition controls the Judiciary Committee, it is virtually certain that the proposal presented today will be approved and submitted next week to the House of Representatives vote. There, the 'impeachment' - a term equivalent to an imputation in a court of law - will also be approved, again with the vote of the Democrats.

In January, the process will go to the Senate, where a 'political trial' will be held that will decide the dismissal of the president. There, the tables are inverted. Republicans have a majority, and therefore, Trump will not be dismissed. This is what happened with Clinton and Johnson, although he got rid of being cast out of office by a single vote.
