According to her, in order to resolve the situation in Syria, it is necessary to work out a solution that will ensure stability and security in the region and “voluntary return of refugees”.

“The question of what this solution might look like is the creation of an internationally controlled security zone with the involvement of Turkey and Russia to de-escalate the situation,” Süddeutsche Zeitung quoted her as saying.

The head of the German Ministry of Defense believes that this will also help in the fight against the militants of the Islamic State terrorist organization * and will ensure the implementation of the constitutional process in Syria.

Crump-Karrenbauer announced that she had already agreed on her initiative with German Chancellor Angela Merkel and intended to submit a proposal to her Western partners at a meeting of NATO defense ministers on October 24–25 in Brussels.

Earlier, Russian leader Vladimir Putin discussed the situation in Syria with French President Emmanuel Macron.

On October 19, telephone conversations between Putin and Merkel were also held, during which the parties noted the importance of the first meeting of the Constitutional Committee of the SAR scheduled for late October.
