05:50: The UN Security Council meets today to discuss recent US strikes in Iraq and Syria

This is an emergency meeting at the request of the Russian representative to the UN. For Russia, the American strikes are “a threat to peace and security”. The representative of Moscow will defend this position this afternoon before the United Nations Security Council, reports our correspondent in New York

Loubna Anaki

. This meeting is taking place as Washington carried out a series of strikes this weekend in Iraq, Syria, but also in Yemen.

In Iraq and Syria, the United States has targeted pro-Iranian armed groups in response to the killing ten days ago of three American soldiers in a drone attack. In Yemen, it was once again the Houthi rebels who were targeted. In total, more than 120 targets were bombed in these three countries in less than 48 hours, while the United States assures that it does not want an escalation in the region, and especially not a war with Iran. But Joe Biden, under pressure after the death of the three American soldiers, believes that his country has an obligation to act to “

protect American troops and international maritime trade in the Red Sea

”. He does not rule out new operations in the region.

Given that Washington, like Moscow, has the right of veto in the Security Council, today's meeting is unlikely to result in concrete measures.
