In giving him this medal, the highest civilian decoration of the United States, Mr. Trump evoked a player with "unique talent" and traced the main stages of an "incredible life".

Standing next to Donald Trump, he said the latter was "the most extraordinary president" he knew.

The former player, born to French parents who emigrated to the United States, is a regular on the scene.

In an interview with NBA.com, he said it was his seventh invitation to the White House, his first visit back in 1954, chaired by Dwight Eisenhower.
