Russian boxer Maxim Dadashev, an emergency brain surgeon in the United States after a failed fight, has died, the Russian Boxing Federation announced on Tuesday.

"Maxim Dadashev died in the United States as a result of injuries received in the fight against Subriel Matias," the Russian Boxing Federation said in a statement, offering his condolences "to the family and loved ones" of the boxer.

The secretary general of the Russian Boxing Federation, Oumar Kremliev, told the Russian media that the boxer's body was going to be repatriated to Russia and that financial support would be provided to his family.

The fight in Oxon Hill (Maryland), in the light welterweight category between Dadashev and Puerto Rican Subriel Matias, was stopped on Friday night by Russia's corner man, James "Buddy" McGirt, at the end of the 11th reprise.

Dadashev, nicknamed "Mad Max", was immediately taken to the hospital after the fight and operated to relieve the pressure on his brain caused by bleeding.

His physical trainer, Donatas Janusevicius, then told the US media that Dadashev was "in critical condition but (...) stable" and that the bleeding stopped.

Dadashev, 28, was undefeated in 13 fights (11 wins by KO) before meeting Matias, 27, who had 13 KOs in as many appearances in the ring at the professionals.
