Veteran Dutchman Arjen Robben has ended his career with football, saying his retirement decision was the toughest decision he has ever made.

"I have decided to end my career as a professional footballer, it is without doubt the most difficult decision I have made in my career, it was a decision that the heart and mind collided," the Sun newspaper quoted Robin as saying on Thursday.

"The love of football gives you the conviction that you can still deal with the whole world, unlike the fact that not everything works the way you want, and the 16-year-old is no longer aware of what injuries mean."

"So I'll definitely stop, but it's a good way," said the winner of the Champions League in Bayern Munich in 2013.

The 35-year-old has played in major clubs in Europe, including Chelsea, Real Madrid and Bayern Munich, and has played 606 games in various competitions, scoring 210 goals throughout his 19-year career.

Robin left Bayern Munich after finishing his contract with the Bavarian team at the end of last season, ending his career in the 10-year-old Allianz Arena.

Robben was likely to return to the Netherlands and was also linked to moving to Leicester City in the summer transfer period, but decided to end his career with football, explaining that his body was no longer fit for physical confrontation.

Robin began his career with the Dutch side of Groningen before moving to PSV Eindhoven in 2002, making his way into his professional career and crowned with a host of titles with many of the defending teams.
