In the north of the Netherlands, the region around Groningen has suffered in recent years relatively small, but devastating, earthquakes due to intensive gas extraction in the largest field in Europe. The population has mobilized and the subject has become a campaign issue: the government has announced the closure of the site by 2030 and is ready to bet on renewable energy.
