The Emirates Standardization and Metrology Authority (ESMA) has announced the implementation of a standard for electronic nicotine products, which will enter into force mid April, according to the Director General of the Authority, Abdullah Al-Mu'aini.

Al-Mu'aini told Emirates Al-Youm that the UAE has issued the standard with clear rules and conditions that meet the maximum safety and safety standards for its users and comply with the federal law on tobacco control.

He added that the state allowed the circulation of electronic cigarettes in local markets under strict conditions and controls, including obtaining three levels of formal approval before the supply of these products to the country markets.

Al-Mu'aini stressed that the UAE standard stipulates technical requirements that should be met in the electronic cigarette, and other requirements related to importation, manufacturing, packaging, supply, circulation and weights, in addition to statistical data to be available on the product statement card, including its health warnings.

It also includes items related to electronic cigarettes, electronic shisha, and refill supplies such as electronic liquid containers.

He considered that the mandatory decision is in line with the directives of the Government of the UAE in the field of protection of society from health risks, noting that the specification is mandatory includes electronic nicotine products that are used as alternatives to traditional cigarettes.

He pointed out that the Authority aims to raise the quality indicators of e-cigarette products in the market to the maximum extent, in line with the WHO Framework Convention on Tobacco Control, European legislation and the British standard in this regard, as well as UAE Federal Law No. 15 of 2009 on Tobacco Control .

The standard was based on best global practices in this context, such as the WHO Framework Convention on Tobacco Control, European legislation and the British Standard.

The specifications also include products that contain processed tobacco, which is heated by an electronic device (without combustion), and specifies import, processing, packaging, display, handling, weights and explanatory notes on their label. These products are in several forms and types that may or may not contain Tobacco, which are present in the markets and are currently traded randomly, without any controls or restrictions.

The UAE standard on the requirements for nicotine products includes traditional counterpart tobacco products (cigarettes, cigars, pipe, cigarillo, hookah, hookah). These nicotine delivery systems include products that do not contain tobacco and refill containers for refill Such as electronic liquid containers.

The UAE standard includes tobacco products that do not contain tobacco such as electronic cigarettes (electronic shisha) and refillable refill packages such as electronic liquids.
