According to NBC, the State Department ordered employees who do not fulfill emergency powers to leave Venezuela.

"US citizens living or traveling in Venezuela should consider leaving Venezuela ... as long as commercial flights are available," the foreign office added.

As Secretary of State Mike Pompeo noted, for the State Department, "there is no more important priority than ensuring the security of all people in American missions."

Earlier, Venezuelan leader Nicolas Maduro, during a speech at the Supreme Court, said he had decided to close the embassy and all the consulates of Venezuela in the United States.

Also on January 23, Maduro announced that Venezuela was breaking off diplomatic relations with the United States.

At the same time, the State Department stated that they did not recognize the right of Maduro to break off diplomatic relations.
