Eight human rights organizations in Egypt have called on the independent press to pressure President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi to abide by the provisions of the constitution and to leave office as soon as his second and final term ends in June 2022.

In a joint statement issued on the anniversary of the 25 January Revolution, human rights organizations announced their refusal to intervene in any way in the upcoming presidential elections, so that the Egyptians could choose their next president voluntarily and without guardianship.

She said that the calls to amend the Constitution were more appropriate to demand respect for its articles, especially those concerning rights and freedoms that were violated on a daily basis.

The organizations that signed the statement are Cairo Institute for Human Rights Studies, the Egyptian Front for Human Rights, the Arab Network for Human Rights Information, the Committee for Justice, the Center for Justice, the Nadim Center, the Egyptian Commission for Rights and Freedoms, .

Not to amend the Constitution
The organizations stressed their total refusal to amend the constitution or to nominate President Sisi for a third term under any circumstances, who won a second term last year.

In the view of these organizations, priority should be given in the remaining period of Sisi's rule to the task of saving the country from its catastrophic course, according to the statement.

Over the past few days, calls have been made to amend the constitution to allow the extension of the mandate of Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi. The 2014 constitution - passed a year after the military coup - stipulates two presidential terms of four years.

One of these calls was written by the journalist close to Sisi, Yasser Rizk, who called for an extension of the term of office to be six years, and if this is not possible, the establishment of a higher council headed by Sisi, including the former and subsequent president of the Sisi, also called for the text in the Constitution on the role The army in protecting what he described as the objectives of the June 30, 2013 revolution.
