A little over three weeks after an aquarium in a Berlin hotel burst, almost all the fish housed in Zoo Berlin have recovered.

A spokeswoman for the zoo said on Monday that nine of the around 200 animals had died.

Seven of them had already arrived dead or died shortly afterwards from their injuries.

"Everyone else has recovered well."

According to the spokeswoman, the animals – including cichlids, surgeonfish and batfish – will continue to be cared for in the rear area.

"It's not certain how long they'll stay with us."

In mid-December, the large Aquadom aquarium with 1,500 fish in a Berlin hotel near Alexanderplatz burst.

Almost all the fish in the aquarium died in the process.

According to the building owner, around 630 fish were rescued from the underground breeding tanks.

They were passed on to the Zoo, Sealife at Dom Aquarée and a network of specialist breeders.

The cause of the bursting of the aquarium is under further investigation.

The spokesman for the building owner announced on Monday that a central expert is currently being selected for this purpose.

The official order could therefore be awarded in January.

After the clean-up work and the establishment of security in the affected part of the building, the conditions for "construction site operation" have now been created, it said.

Most of the elevators are already usable again.

"The clearing of the building will probably be completed in January - an important milestone in order to be able to ramp up operations in all affected areas step by step."
