He pointed out - in his speech to an episode of "Beyond the News" program (29/6/2022) - that this step showed that Russia's war on Ukraine changed the security environment in Europe and made many countries less secure, which made Finland and Sweden want to join NATO. After they were taking a position of neutrality and not militarily siding with any party.

He believed that European countries should wonder if it is in their interest to consider Russia a real threat to their security, especially after its war on Ukraine, stressing that Russia is really a source of danger and threat despite all the goodwill initiatives presented to it.

On the other hand, Andrei Fedorov, the former Russian Deputy Foreign Minister, saw that NATO's decision creates difficulties and challenges for Russia, due to the creation of new borders with the alliance, considering that this new strategy puts Russia in "a direct and major danger with the alliance," according to him.

He also explained that NATO's proximity to the Russian border means that Russia will increase its security measures in this region, as the alliance will do as well, which will lead to new tensions.

direct danger

Fedorov added that Europe views Russia as a direct threat, while Moscow is trying to find a way of peaceful coexistence that prevents any direct confrontation with NATO countries, noting that relations between the main NATO member states are not in the best condition.

NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg had announced that NATO leaders had taken a decision to invite Finland and Sweden to join the alliance, considering this as evidence of the Russian president's failure to stop its expansion.

This was accompanied by the announcement by US President Joe Biden that his country's forces would be repositioned in Europe.

In turn, Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov said that the further expansion of NATO will lead to instability and will not achieve security for its members, and that what he described as NATO's aggressive approach to contain Russia will not in any way affect Russia's capabilities in ensuring its security.
