Egyptian doctors remove a 4-centimeter pen tip from a child's eye

An Egyptian medical team managed to extract a pen from the eye of a 12-year-old child, while preserving the integrity and functions of the eye, at the Ophthalmology Hospital in Zagazig, Sharkia Governorate.

And "Sky News Arabia", the director of the hospital, eye consultant, Muhammad Issa, reported that the child arrived at the hospital and had a tumor next to the eye and in its cavity.

He added: "When the child was asked about the medical history of the case, he said that he was beaten with a pen two months ago, and it seems that this happened while playing with his friends or in a fight, and the child was afraid at the time that he would mention what happened in detail or inform his family accurately about the incident."

The doctor continued: “We conducted a series of tests and x-rays, and there was a suspicion of the presence of a foreign body next to the eye.

We performed the surgery and by opening the place we found a pen tip 4 centimeters long, and we succeeded in extracting it, and we preserved the safety of the child and his eyes, and there were no infections.”

He continued: "The case is strange because it did not cause any damage to the eye when it occurred. The pen passed next to the eye and settled in its cavity in an area called Al-Hajjaj, and there were no signs of the presence of such a pen, so that we initially diagnosed the case as a bruise."

Issa pointed out that «the CT scan revealed the presence of a foreign body in the eye, but it was not confirmed because the body is plastic, and the CT scan highlights the bones.

We thank God that the child survived without any damage to the eye.”

And the senior consultant eye at the hospital, Ayman El-Shazly, explained, “The child arrived at the outpatient clinic with a tumor in the upper nasal part of the right orbit, and after examining the case, there was a bruise and suspected blood collection in the eye socket, and a medical team was formed and it was decided to perform surgery for the case, especially with the belief that there is a foreign body. The cause of this blood pool.”

He added, "The case was surgically dealt with, and I was surprised that there was a solid object inside the tumor without knowing what it was, and I tried to extract it very carefully to preserve the integrity of the eye and muscles, and it turned out that it was solid and did not appear in the x-rays because it is plastic."

Al-Shazly stated that “the case did not have any trace of an injury, just swelling, and even the child’s family did not realize that what he was exposed to was the penetration of a pen into this area, especially as he improved from the injury, but the presence of a gathering in this area is what prompted the parents to follow up on the matter.” It is fortunate for the child that the part inside the eye did not have any interaction, and the child himself did not realize that there was something inside the eye.”

He pointed out that the pen settled in an area that "did not harm any vital place, and it is good that the direction of the pen was horizontal, and it did not cause any symptoms that harm the brain."
