Britain's JK Rowling, who penned the famous

Harry Potter

children's novel saga , has appealed for donations to help children trapped in orphanages in Ukraine, promising to match those donations up to £1million.

The novelist relayed on Twitter an appeal launched via the Lumos foundation, which she co-founded in 2005 and which is currently raising funds to provide food, hygiene kits and medical kits to people affected by the humanitarian crisis.

“I will personally contribute donations to this appeal, up to 1 million pounds sterling”, or approximately 1.20 million euros, wrote JK Rowling, thanking the donors on the social network.

“More children are now at risk”

Lumos explains on its website that it works in the region of Zhytomyr, west of the capital Kiev;

a region where, before the Russian invasion, more than 1,500 children were in orphanages.

About 100,000 children live in institutions in the country, says Lumos.

“The invasion by Russian forces means that more children are now in danger,” warns the foundation, which wants to help children displaced and traumatized by the conflict.
