• Festivities The European Capital of Christmas is ... the Madrid town of Torrejón de Ardoz

  • Getaways Where are the most beautiful and famous Christmas markets in Europe

There are

104 in total and

each one more beautiful.

Hence, it is the number of localities that make up the Association of the Most Beautiful Villages in Spain.

Most of them have set out to attract visitors to these festivities through tradition, natural landscapes, heritage, history and, of course, Christmas delicacies.

"It is a perfect occasion to enjoy beautiful towns where you can explore unknown corners and feel

the joy of Christmas

in enclaves full of

authenticity, tradition and history

", explains Francisco Mestre, president of the Association.

Here are several examples of how to spend different festivals from town to town.

PUEBLA DE SANABRIA (ZAMORA)

This Zamora town

is illuminated every day from 6:00 p.m.

The old town thus shows off its best clothes, and although it maintains its characteristic gold (almost a tradition) it has decided to renew itself.

A giant sign wishes all visitors

Merry Christmas,

the focus of all the photographs.

Visiting Puebla de Sanabria at Christmas is to walk through its illuminated streets, from the square around the wall, from where we can see the entire town in its splendor.

In addition,

poinsettias and garlands

of lights decorate countless houses and streets.

VILLANUEVA DE LOS INFANTES (CIUDAD REAL)

This town of Castilla-La Mancha has organized a full schedule of activities for

infanteños and visitors

until January 8, starting with the lighting of the Christmas lights every night, which will continue until

the Three Kings parade.

The traditional

Nativity Scene Contest

in the neighbors' houses cannot be missed, so that they can be viewed by both the local population and tourists, a symbol of an ancestral heritage inherited in the town.

PEÑISCOLA (CASTELLÓN)

We jump to this municipality of Castellón that lives Christmas with more enthusiasm than ever.

Reason: it has passed to the final phase of the eighth edition of Ferrero Rocher's campaign to illuminate the festivities of a town in Spain.

Under the slogan

Together we shine more

, the well-known brand of chocolates will turn on

the lights of Peñíscola or Briviesca

on December 18

, the other town that has managed to reach the final.

The winner will be known this Saturday.

In addition, among the activities and events scheduled for these dates is its traditional

Christmas Market

, festive-themed concerts,

the reception of Santa Claus

and the popular parade of the Magi.

SANTILLANA DEL MAR (CANTABRIA)

Until next January 5, the entire town will be illuminated.

And not only that, but the residents of the beautiful Cantabrian town (and their visitors) will be able to enjoy the

Santillana del Mar

International Circus Gala

, the music, humor and magic show of

Christmas Cabare

t, the Christmas market,

a nativity scene living

and a solidarity festival with different performances and raffles.

The finishing touch will come from the hand of one of his most classic representations, the staging of his parade, declared a

Festival of National Tourist Interest

in 2009.

BAGERGUE (LÉRIDA)

We are facing the highest inhabited municipality in

the Alto Arán valley,

located at 1,490 meters.

It is a fairytale town with beautiful stone constructions representative of Aranese architecture.

Its well-cared houses, its

flowery balconies

and its snow covering everything make it the perfect enclave to spend Christmas.

For all these reasons, Bagergue has been part of the Association The Most Beautiful Towns of Spain since 2019.

CALACEITE (TERUEL)

As is tradition, these days the town celebrates the

Oil Fair

, which this year has coincided with the second edition of the Christmas Fair.

The

nougat, gifts,

Christmas decorations and especially olive oil, are the main protagonists.

All this, enlivened with Christmas carols concerts.

In its streets, tourists can feel that they are traveling to another era thanks to the

cobbled streets,

which they will access after passing through the unique chapel-portals, which were built on the wall.

Other reasons to visit this town in the Teruel region of Matarraña: the arcaded

;

the Town Hall building and the archaeological sites.

GUADALUPE (CÁCERES)

This municipality of Cáceres, a

World Heritage Site,

shines these days thanks to more than 100,000 light bulbs and 367 luminous motifs.

Some ornaments that are accompanied by

12,400 meters of garlands,

with the Monastery of Guadalupe as the central building of a decoration that, year after year, attracts visitors from all over Spain and from different parts of the world.

Music also plays an important role in the celebrations, with

concerts and parades

that add to the festive atmosphere.

THE POOL (SALAMANCA)

We jump to this little one in the heart of the Sierra de Francia Salamanca.

Its streets and squares take us directly to the classic tales of Hans Christian Andersen, with its low houses decorated with flowers.

All the architecture of La Alberca is built with stone and wood, so it is impossible not to get intoxicated with the Christmas spirit.

The smell of homemade sweets such as nougat, perrunillas and wafers,

the artisan jewelry stores

and the embroideries that are still woven today dot the streets of the municipality during these dates.

In addition, those who decide to spend the night of the kings here will be able to enjoy a living nativity scene that concludes with the visit of the three Wise Men giving gifts to children under ten who are in town.

BÁRCENA MAYOR (CANTABRIA)

We return to Cantabria, where this town of characteristic

stone houses

that seem to be taken from a Christmas postcard

is hidden

.

Located inside the

Saja Besaya Natural Park,

Bárcena Mayor preserves its mountain architecture in practically every corner.

If what you are looking for is to spend a Christmas surrounded by calm and

good food, it

is the perfect place.
