150 years ago, British Lucy Walker became the first woman to climb the Matterhorn.

It is time, then, to put a face to women in mountain sports.

The Swiss initiative 100% Women Peak Challenge has precisely that goal.

Devised by the Swiss Alpine Club SAC, the Swiss Association of Mountain Guides and Mammut, it wants to get rope teams made up exclusively of women to climb the

48 highest peaks of the Swiss Alps.

The campaign started on March 8 and will run until September 8, 2021.

It is not about a competition between the participants, but being able to experience the 48 quadromiles together.

Among the most prominent climbers is the Swiss pop singer Beatrice Egli, who wants to fulfill her dream of

climbing the Matterhorn

in July.

Or the first Saudi mountaineer, Raha Moharrak, who aspires to crown the highest peak in Switzerland,

the Dufour peak.

"We call on climbers from all over the world to be part of this unique campaign and conquer a four-thousand of their choice. A selfie at the summit is enough to participate," the Swiss organizers explained.

All those selfies are already collected on the interactive website Peakchallenge.myswitzerland.com.

From the Matterhorn to Monte Rosa

Women from all over the world can participate.

The page also offers an interactive showcase of the most famous peaks of the Alps.

Every time a mountaineer crowns one of them, that peak is marked in green.

However, the ascent is the responsibility of each participant and this is a challenge that, depending on the mountain chosen, requires a greater or lesser degree of

experience and technique

in the mountain.

Thus, the Breithorn, the Bishorn, and the Allalinhorn are among the easiest four-thousand technically, while the Pollux, Alphubel, Weissmies and Lagginhorn peaks are considered of easy to moderate difficulty.

Switzerland offers those who wish it the opportunity to receive advice (free) from the experienced mountain guide Caroline George.

For those who do not dare with a four thousand, Switzerland has also prepared a repertoire of

230 proposals

related to women and the feminine vision of Switzerland.

All the experiences - lasting from a few hours to several days - are led by women.

A good example is the five-day excursion in the Monte Rosa massif of the Mammut Alpine School, led by professional mountaineer and mountain guide Caro North.
