Three young Afghans were smuggled in a truck on stinking animal skins for two days from Serbia to Rehau in the Upper Franconian district of Hof.

As the federal police announced on Friday, the 17 to 20-year-old men drew attention by knocking when the truck driver arrived at the leather factory there.

"They were on the intensely smelling cargo for about two days and were frozen and hungry," it said.

According to the investigation, they were smuggled into Serbia via Iran and Turkey. A smuggler brought them onto the loading area of the semi-trailer near Belgrade. The roof of the tarpaulin had been cut open. "For the smuggling, amounts in the four-digit range were paid," said the police. The illegally entered migrants were taken to a reception center in Bamberg.
