Météo France on Tuesday placed six departments of the extreme southwest in orange alert "violent wind" due to a "short winter storm", according to a bulletin published at 6 am. The alert will run from 12 noon to 8 p.m. and will concern Ariège, Haute-Garonne, Gers, Landes, Pyrénées-Atlantiques and Hautes-Pyrénées.
This storm called Myriam, of short duration and limited geographic extension, can cause damage, warns the forecaster. Before dawn, the depression touched down on the Bay of Biscay. It must travel rapidly towards the Gulf of Lion. Between the beginning of the afternoon and the evening, it will cause strong winds in the plain north of the Pyrenees and in the mountains.
Winds of 150 km / h or more
The expected values are of the order of 120-130 km / h near the Basque and Landes coasts; 100 to 110 km / h very punctually a little more in the plain; 120-130 km / h in the mountains at ski resorts, with 150 km / h or more towards passes and peaks.
Météo France also warns that the Basque and Landes coasts will experience "strong waves". These windy conditions may occasionally be accompanied by thunderstorms. It will snow a bit in the mountains with a rain / snow limit which will temporarily rise above 1,500 m altitude at midday.
